Praying and Doing

Buddhist monastery in Ulan Ude - Praying and Doing

Six years ago, just after Brexit, a friend and I traveled across Russia on the TransSiberian express.

It was the journey of a lifetime. We stopped off in several cities along the way, and met some amazing people. They were so anxious to know what we thought of Russia, and so delighted when we said, in all truth, that we had found everyone incredibly friendly and helpful, even if they only spoke a little bit of English (which was always more than my Russian, despite having a GCSE ‘O' level in it!). They were curious, and deeply hospitable, sharing food and drink along the journey, and welcoming us into their country.

Several other things struck me on the trip.

Firstly the sheer size of Siberia. It goes on forever. A large part of it is flat, and there is an endless supply of birch trees. It’s rich in mineral and other resources and it’s way more than half of Russia geographically speaking.

Secondly the diversity of culture - the picture of a Buddhist Temple is from Ulan Ude on the Russia/Mongolia border. Very different from the minarets of Moscow, or the Hermitage palace in St Petersburg.

Thirdly, the political divide along gender lines.

The men all celebrated the fact that Britain had just voted itself out of the EU.’ Together Britain and Russia can stand strong against the EU and America’ was a typical remark. They also, almost without exception, celebrated Putin.

The women weren’t that interested in Brexit - ‘too soon to say’, they’d remark. But most of them were repelled by Putin for different reasons. Some because of the negative impact of his economic policies or his warring tendencies (this was 6 years ago). Some because of family members who had disappeared in the night, or been arrested for their opposition to Putin. Some because they felt he was an all round dangerous, egotistical leader who wasn't doing Russia or the world any favours.

Today, while I am thinking of Ukraine and sending them prayers, I’m also thinking of the Russian women I met on my travels, who wouldn't have agreed with this war, any more than they agreed with what the man was up to 6 years ago.

I’m also thinking of Russians I know living outside Russia who are experiencing verbal abuse, and feel unsafe, because they are Russian and must therefore be Putin-lovers.

So What Can We Do?

In my Secret Art of Huna Facebook group on Monday, we focused on peace in Ukraine as part of our Monday Morning Meditation. However, it's very clear to me that there are several things to think about when we send peace blessings anywhere.

The first is, what’s the energy you are sending peace from? Are you at peace within yourself, or are you sending it out there in the spirit of anger? Because that’s not going to work well. Before you send out peace blessings, it’s important to be in a state of peace yourself. Suspend the anger, the hurt, the fear at the very least. Do some breathing or other processes to sooth your own system first.

The second is that sending peace blessings isn’t really enough.

When an animal is under stress, for example the gazelle threatened by a hungry lion, if it survives, it will usually shake itself off. As humans, when we are stressed, we often don’t physically move. We don’t shake it off. We internalise it and hold on to it.

Many of us are angry and even afraid at the situation in Ukraine. We see the parallels in the run up to World War II, we know he has nuclear weapons, and if he gets past Ukraine - then what?

It’s time to use the anger, the fear, the hurt for action. It’s easy to ask ‘what can I do - it’s so far away?’ However, right now there’s a growing refugee crisis, and the Ukrainian food supplies are diminishing fast. We can donate to charities that are doing the work for us. We can keep up the pressure on our politicians to separate Putin and his closest supporters from their assets outside Russia. We can talk about it.

And we can pray and send our love and blessings, and know that this is not the work of the Russian people. It’s the work of an Imperialistic despot.

If you’d like to experience the meditation, here is the link.

Stay well, and safe, and thanks for reading through to the end.
